A Few Movie Ideas for a Rainy Day

I am by NO means a movie buff. But, when the sun is drowned in rain drops and rolling thunder, I must heat up some soup and pop a few blu-rays in. Here are a few movies that have that just right amount of "snug factor" for a rainy day.

Because it should be number one on every list: Casablanca. I don't need to explain it. It just- nothing quite gets to anyone like their unrequited love. Bogart and Bergman DEFINE on-screen chemistry. If you can, watch it on blu-ray. It is so crisp, but still maintains that beautiful charm that has sustained it all these years, that it took my breath away.

Big Fish- The whole son trying to learn about his dying father premise may be a bit too emotional for some. And do watch this with a box of tissues. Yet, it is so aesthetically rich and beautiful, that it is a must see. Get more info at IMDB

Elizabethtown- Okay, more son/dead dad stuff. Here, though, the son is on a road trip home from his father's memorial and learns about himself. A lovely story (and Kirsten Dunst steals the show), but the soundtrack is legendary. Everything you expect from a Cameron Crowe flick.

Watch the trailer here:

Almost Famous- Another Cameron Crowe masterpiece. And, if you start to feel bummed out by all the grey- there is always "Tiny Dancer".

Sideways- Yet another road trip movie. This time, cemented adulthood is creeping in and sometimes you just have to grab life and do what you please. And when you do, make sure there is wine. More info at IMDB

A Good Year- Speaking of wine, this Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard vehicle combines love, mistrust, discovery, reflection, and rebellion into a beautiful French vintage. You WILL want to pack your suitcase once the credits roll.
Under the Tuscan Sun- Following the theme of starting over, Diane Lane is adorable as a recent divorcee who, when forced on an Italian holiday by her besties, decides to never return stateside. Reflective, funny, sunny, sad, empowering. more IMDB linkage

If these people thought that finding true love and happiness was tough, they never met Westley from The Princess Bride. Need I explain what makes this movie a classic? Inconceivable! Princess Bride quotes- and there are so many great ones!

You've Got Mail- We recently lost the legendary Nora Ephron, but that is not the only reason to include this magical movie on this list. Reprising the chemistry they brought us in Sleepless in Seattle, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are charming. New York City is charming. The soundtrack is charming. We all fall in love with, or want to be, Kathleen Kelly. Oh, and the old dial-up sounds? Somehow, charming.
Moulin Rouge!- I love good music in a movie, and this reinvention of the musical brings it a-plenty. From a tango Roxanne to Ewan McGregor making us simultaneously swoon with Your Song, it is a sonic delight. Bright, flashy, and a spot on Nicole Kidman, this ode to la vie boheme is the perfect antithesis to a rainy day. Until the end, but all you need is love. hey, IMDB info again!

Now, go make some popcorn, order some Chinese delivery and take advantage of an excuse to stay inside!
