Last Minute Labor Day Luau Celebration Ideas (Even for those on a budget)

Labor day weekend is breathing down  our necks! Even though the kiddies have begun school, there is still time for one last summer fling! Why not bring the tropics to your backyard? This can be done easily and cheaply.

Palm trees- party rental facilities rent everything from life like replicas to neon light up faux trees. But if simplicity or a tight budget is on your mind, little hanging palm trees can be created with just some poster board and streamers. Cut four leaves on green poster-board (for the size pictured, one sheet makes 12 leaves) and arrange in an "x" formation , loop a yellow streamer four times from the middle, staple, and voila! Cut the end of the streamers so they all dangle instead of loop. They are fun, summery replacements for your typical streamers.
Food- It is labor day, so I say break out the BBQ one last time before it is better used for s'mores than burgers. BUT, ambrosia salad makes a great summer dessert. Mix 8 oz light sour cream, 8 oz can of mandarin oranges, a cup of crushed pineapple, a larger jar of stemless maraschino cherries, a cup and a half of coconut (or a cup if you don't LOVE coconut), and a cup of mini marshmallows. Stir, chill 4 hours, serve!

Games- If spending two hours just staring at the person next to you might get a bit boring, spice things up with a fun game. Here I recommend the coconut relays. All you need are a few coconuts from the grocery store (at least 1 for each team). Divide up into equal teams and designate a start and finish point. Each team member must run to the finish line and back with the coconut between their knees, if you drop the coconut you must stop and place before you run again, and the first team to finish wins. I GUARANTEE laughs and great pictures. Tip: Let those on a team 7 and under just run with the coconut instead, its a tad too big for them. They will have just as much fun.

Drinks- Fruity and fun is best. See these pages on my blog for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic suggestions!   Modern Suburbanite's Fruity and Fresh Non-Alcoholic Drinks and Modern Suburbanite's Simple Two Ingredient Drinks. Of course, throwing in some Coronas and limes into a cooler may be a good idea for those with less of a sweet tooth.

Most of all, just have a great time! Enjoy the pool or beach or even sprinklers if possible. If you get sad, remember, Autumn is going to be pretty great too!
